I am willing to bet that the previous 10 domains you have looked at buying today have either been "parked" or showing an error (e.g. unreachable or 500 server error). The problem with that is: search engines index those problems. Parked domains will generally have keyword search links plastered all over them leading to inner pages stuffed with more advertising links ... each of those keyword ad pages gets indexed by search engines! How long do you think Yahoo will hold a ranking-grudge against a site that flooded its results with hundreds or even thousands of spammy keyword ad pages? And then there are the error pages which mean that you get no benefit from buying an older domain as search engines will never have known it existed until you make it visible.
We have bought several such domains in the past and it took us between 6-24 months to get them cleaned up using Google Webmaster Tools, contacting search engine support teams and manually requesting de-indexing of all the parked-keyword-spam pages. Its hard work, so state that when making an offer to someone who has been using parking services for domains they are looking to sell. Demand a reduction in price if they have not looked after it properly.
All our domains are eventually built in to actual, useable website like these. If a website has not been built on this domain yet, then an appropriate holding page that indicates the possible topic of such a domain name is used which allows the search engines access. There are no duplicate content issues either as any page with similar content (like the generic Contact Us page we have on every domain) uses noindex/noarchive meta tags to avoid any possible penalties. You will be buying a domain without us creating any bad history between it and search engines.
