Work Accident Injury LawyerWith an estimated 2.5 million people in the UK affected and £10 billion in lost production annually, back pain has become one of the largest problems facing the workforce today.
The Arthritis Research Campaign (ARC) defined back pain as a great scourge of the 21st century. Large numbers of patients and many health care personnel think that activity worsens back pain but the opposite is true. A 180-degree change in opinion is needed as new studies reveal that less activity weakens back muscles and heightened activity aids in recovery and reduces pain.
Arthritis is the second most common cause of time off work among all workers, men and women. One child in a thousand has a childhood form of arthritis, belying the perception that it is a condition that only affects the elderly.
The Arthritis Research Campaign (ARC) was founded in 1936, and exists to raises funds which promote medical research into the cause, treatment and cure of arthritic conditions including the following missions: to educate students, physicians and associated professionals in the healthcare industry about arthritis; to offer information directly to people afflicted with arthritis and to the public at large. ARC is the only major medical research charity in the UK investigating arthritis in all its forms. Millions of pounds are provided every year for grants funding research, education and training.
ARC continues its research on back pain that include clinical trials throughout the UK to determine the best therapy for treating back pain; they have set aside more than £2 million to conduct this research. ARC has discovered that remaining active may aid in preventing a chronic, long-term condition. The organisation also stated that a sizeable number of back pain sufferers become depressed and anxious when they discover that they have a chronic condition and that those people usually had a lower pain threshold. They also suggested those types would need more support in therapy.
New figures show that more than 40 per cent of all adults experience back pain lasting more than one day. Back problems cost the nation about £6 billion year, almost 2/3rds of this amount due to time lost from work.
Although remaining active through therapy, regular exercise and manipulation has proved to assist in lowering the level of back pain, the studies have not yet determined which exercises are preferable, but ARC hopes to discover this through the current research being conducted.
